This project was an introduction to the "Interactive communication" where an audience is active in the communication process, and the aim of the artist is to catch the attention of the world around, through a performance, an opera, an instigation of a concept in different ways.
Me and my colleague had an incredible quote as starting point:
"I' am a camera with its shutter open, quite passive, recording, not thinking." by Christofer Isherwood
We started an interesting brain-storming where we found some key-words that expressed multiple concepts included in the sentence like camera, open, passive, recording. Our main concept was to "become a camera" and then "be a camera".
How solve it? Well, it was a great point to exceed so we decided to create something was concrete and real. Something was surprising, unexpected and incredible (and funny too). We built a human-size camera.
It was amazing sketching and searching something inspired us. We went around to hardware store, supermarket, off-licenze to find something good to use in our creation, and then, after have bought good stuff we created The Camera.
At this point I have to introduce my colleague, Luke. I have to be honest, I'm so grateful for his collaboration and discover to have multiple common art interests, like portray people around, during a travel on the metro, bus or seated on a bench. For this reason we decided to fuse our common skill and our research.
So, The Camera had the task to portray in few minutes anyone wanted to.
From this moment it started a successions of amazing moments to share with strangers around the London Eye where many people are concentrated for tourist reasons.
At first it was a bit complicated gain the confidence of the people because, as expected, lots of them though we wanted just money, we wanted to disturb them and anything else. But we persisted our aim and finally I could say to have been in the box about two hours!
Now more than ever I could express the joy I felt doing this interactive project. Drawing it was amazing but nothing is possible compare to the incredible smiles I enjoyed and without Luke who drew everybody's attention it wasn't the same.
I love this project and our outcome. We reached the goal. We had fun and it is most important thing.
