After have chosen our pathway and have arranged a new group where the time to create a good friendship is not enough, we started again with a new brief. The main difference in respect on the last projects is the Time, in fact we have ten days to start and complete our works, the reason is the new kind of project they set for us, these project are demanding and for me, till now it was not easy respect the deadline.
This task was exiting for the incredible freedom we had. We were free to create an image or set of images, a book or publication, poster, website, an animation or film after chose two concepts of a list. I chose "How to survive" and "How to listen".
I analysed the concept of "How to survive" in different point of views and concepts:
- religious: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime"
- literary-philosophical: " The inferno of the living is not something that will be; if there is one, it is what is already here, the inferno where we live every day, that we form by being together. There are two ways to escape suffering it. The first is easy for many: accept the inferno and become such a part of it that you can no longer see it. The second is risky and demands constant vigilance and apprehension: seek and learn to recognise who and what, in the midst of inferno, are not inferno, then make them endure, give them space.” - Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities
- personal concept: survive = never lose imagination/fantasy/dream/curiosity; no comprehension - no survival
I create three illustrations, one for each concept.
Starting from the first point I realised an ironic and critical vision of the religious concept of the survival. I thought to express "The hunger" not like a physical need but like a mental need of ideas. I fused the image of a tuna can, opened but empty to criticise and evidence the right way to survive, that is 'Learn to have own mind, because only through own experiences and ideals we can actually survive.'
The second one starts from Invisible Cities, written by Italo Calvino from which I extracted a main theme for me, "The comprehension" as survival. This concept is represented by a city where little humans appear lost and in search of the other because of the incomprehension they feel. In my opinion only one solution we have to survive, find someone like us, someone could understand what we are and what we are really doing to survive in this world, full of closed mind, interested to live for themselves and nothing to share. Survival is "Looking for someone like you".
The last one includes my personal concept that means "Give birth to your imagination".
Every Illustration have in common the same structure of the head and all of them sweat, because there is no survival without strain.
"How to listen" has the simple aim to encourage the listening of the common sounds in different situations.
I decided to change or interchange the sounds of cars, pigeons, coffee pot, children, creating a weird sensation where the frames doesn't respect the real sound.
It is an invite to listen better what we have around us everyday and dedicate more time to identify each visual and auditive details
